What is Swim Winchester? Swim Winchester is a non-profit organization formed by local residents to design and build an all-season community aquatics facility in Winchester, MA. Read more here: About Us
Who would be able to take advantage of a community pool? The pool will be open to everyone. The facility will offer programming for all ages, from infants to seniors and will be accessible to people with disabilities and limited mobility.
What are the benefits of having a community pool? A pool is a wonderful town asset. It provides recreational opportunities, promotes water safety, supports community wellness initiatives, and creates employment. Why does Winchester need a pool; can’t we just take advantage of other area pools? Winchester residents are spending thousands of dollars monthly at aquatics facilities elsewhere; this money could be spent to benefit our community instead. A local pool is a community gathering place. The high school swim teams practice at 5am in rented space and cannot host home swim meets. Area pools have high initiation and membership fees which are cost-prohibitive for many families. Why are you taking on this project now? The original design of Winchester High School included a pool which was never built. The current renovation of the high school is a perfect opportunity to add the missing pool. Hasn’t a pool initiative been tried before and failed? There have been several past attempts to build a pool which shows that there is a strong desire for a facility. We are committed to building a self-supporting facility that will use revenues to cover operating and maintenance costs. We believe that our public-private partnership approach will be successful.
You are fundraising in stages; what exactly does that mean? We have just completed Phase 1, the planning phase during which we gathered information on community needs and estimated project costs. We are now moving on to site selection and pool design, Phase 2. The final stage is construction (Phase 3).
Will donations be returned if the pool initiative doesn’t move forward? We are currently fundraising for site selection and design. All of the funds raised will go towards administrative costs, architect fees, and analysis so they cannot be reimbursed. If for whatever reason the project does not move forward, the results of the study can be used for a future pool at the high school or another site. Where can I make a donation? Donations can be made through the Swim Winchester website secure payment system: Donate or mailed to Swim Winchester, P.O. Box 44, Winchester, MA 01890 (checks made out to Swim Winchester). How can people get involved? We need supporters to help us spread the word, give feedback on the pool, and help us with events. You can find more information here: How You Can Help Still have questions? Feel free to contact us! We'd love to hear from you: Contact Us
